Quality Work

My chappal had a small problem and went to a cobbler to make it corrected. He was attending another customer and I waited for some time.  During that period I just had a look around his shop.

It was on the pavement for about 4’ * 6’ area covered with some plastic paper over his head as roof with support of sticks taken from different trees. He kept 2 iron boxes, neatly covered with 2 layers of plastic papers to avoid rainy water falling on it. He sits in between these boxes. At the back of him he tied a rope and used it for hanging shoe laces. All laces were hanged neatly, at equal distant & height, colours together. By the side of him, he arranged all the apparatus required by him, in good order, big size to small.  He was having different shaded colour threads for stitching. On his right he kept different colour polish boxes. I could find a bag nearby him containing waste leathers.

While he was repairing the chappal of other person, he needs a piece of leather and he searched for it from the bag for some time. He doesn’t want to use the one he got at first instant but took time to locate waste leather that matches the same colour of his chapel. He cut a portion from it for his use and kept the remaining (a very small piece only) back in the bag safely for future use.

After repairing, he checked it twice before showing it to the owner.  He asked the owner to wear it and get it checked for his comfort.  Once the owner was satisfied, he asked to give it back and cleaned it by brushing it and finally gave back to the owner. Once the work is over, he kept everything in its places and cleaned the place to take new job.

He did not charge huge money for his work and was satisfied with what he got.

By his appearance and nature of work, he may not be a degree holder or person from IIT but the way he run his business shows he is a six sigma black belt holder. Many big companies are spending lot of money on their employee, who are degree holder, for training them on customer relation & customer care but this person simply proved it what it is, without attending such training. Corporate companies seriously can think to send their employee for training to such people.

He wants to maintain good customer relationship more than his profit (poor fellow struggles to get money for his daily livelihood). We have to learn a lot from such people.

Even though I cannot do more than paying some extra money to him for his attitude, I can pray God to give him & his family a happy and healthy life
